Mastering cartooning or the art of caricature is one of those challenges that are both difficult and fun at the same time. It’s important for the portrait painter to understand facial expressions and how to render them in simplified fashion. Cartooning is the most powerful tool for this.
I’m using Mark Simon’s book “Facial Expressions” for my caricature pencil sketches on a paper pad. The book contains a vast number of thumbnail black and white photos of people of diverse ages and ethnicities performing a number of facial expressions that depict the most common emotions. I finished my drawing sessions sketching four well known people. See if you can identify them.
